ORIGINS:

The character was drawn by a cartoonist using the pseudonym “A. Wyatt Mann,” a pun on “a white man.” The pseudonym has been attributed to American artist Nick Bougas, although Bougas himself did not publicly confirm the attribution. His cartoons circulated in right wing publications during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Over time it acquired names including “Happy Merchant,” “Le Happy Merchant,” and “Merchant Face.” Interestingly, the drawing existed online long before the name became firmly established; Know Your Meme's earliest located example of the specific “Le Happy Merchant” terminology is from a 4chan thread in May 2012.
